What this practice tool does
This free tool supports citizenship test preparation with original questions, timed mocks, targeted practice, explanations, and progress feedback for anyone studying Discover Canada.
Learn one topic, rehearse 20 questions, revisit mistakes, or measure category progress. Feedback is for study, not an official result.
Included study features
- English and French question banks
- 20-question, 45-minute timed mock exams
- Random and category-focused practice
- Wrong-answer review notebook
- Category progress analytics
- Progress export and import
Quick start: complete a useful study session
Follow this sequence so every practice session produces a clear next step.
- Choose English or French questions independently from the language used by the page interface.
- Choose a timed exam, random practice, or one or more practice categories.
- Use the wrong-answer notebook to retry missed questions until they become reviewed and mastered.
- In a mock, use the 1-20 navigator. Manual submission requires all 20 answers; timeout submits automatically and marks blanks incorrect.
- Read each explanation and official citation, then practise the weakest category shown in your results.
- Export before moving devices. Import compares current and incoming progress before replacement; browser storage and the file stay under your control.
Practice tool vs. the official citizenship test
The mock follows official format and scoring, but cannot produce an official outcome.
| Feature | Official citizenship test | This practice tool |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 20 questions | 20 questions per timed mock |
| Time | 45 minutes | 45-minute countdown |
| Passing score | At least 15 out of 20 (75%) | 15 out of 20 is shown as the study benchmark |
| Attempts | Up to 3 chances under current IRCC procedure | Unlimited mock and practice attempts |
| Application effect | The official result is part of the IRCC process | Study-only results that never affect an application |
The ten scored study categories
Ten stable Discover Canada categories reveal where your knowledge is strong or incomplete across the subjects assessed by the official test.
- Who We AreCanada's official languages, Indigenous peoples, and the diversity and shared values that define being Canadian.
- Rights & Responsibilities of CitizenshipThe fundamental rights and freedoms and the responsibilities that come with Canadian citizenship.
- Canada's HistoryKey people, events, and dates from early exploration and Confederation through the World Wars and modern Canada.
- How Canadians Govern ThemselvesFederal, provincial, territorial, and municipal roles, the Crown, Parliament, and responsible government.
- Federal ElectionsWho can vote, how federal elections and electoral districts work, and the secret ballot.
- The Justice SystemThe rule of law, the courts, police, and legal rights such as the presumption of innocence.
- Canadian SymbolsNational symbols including the flag, the maple leaf, the anthem, the beaver, and the Peace Tower.
- Canada's EconomyMajor industries, trade, and Canada's regional economies and main trading partners.
- Canada's RegionsThe provinces and territories, capitals, regions, and major physical features of Canada.
- Becoming a Citizen (Oath & Applying)Eligibility, the application steps, the oath of citizenship, and how the test fits into becoming a citizen.
Every timed mock includes at least one question from each category, with remaining questions drawn from a balanced blueprint. Choose categories directly for focused practice.
How the 240-question English and French bank is built
The bank has 240 original English questions and 240 French counterparts. Discover Canada is its foundation; current IRCC pages support test procedures.
English and French items are checked for matching meaning, answer, category, difficulty, and citation. They are original practice wording, never real exam questions.
Sources are checked before release; changed facts are updated and unsupported items retired. Volatile names, including the Monarch, Governor General, Prime Minister, and party leaders, are never scored.
How to study current politicians and parties
Office-holders and parties change. Use the Current politics official link centre for federal links and links covering all 13 provinces and territories, not names from old notes.
Learn each role in Discover Canada, then verify the current Monarch, Governor General, Prime Minister, parties, representatives, and your electoral district shortly before the test.
Learning progress and privacy
Progress stays in local browser storage. Your notebook, statistics, mock summaries, and unlimited attempts remain on that device; no answer history is sent to a server.
Missed questions enter the notebook. Correct retries move them through reviewed and mastered states, while category statistics reveal repeated patterns.
Export creates a JSON backup. Import compares current and incoming progress, warns about discarded data, and requires confirmation before replacement.
Turn results into a practical study routine
Use each result to decide exactly what to study next.
- Take one timed mock without notes and identify the two lowest categories.
- Practise those categories and explain why each answer is correct.
- Review the notebook until missed items are mastered, not correct just once.
- Near test day, complete 20 questions in 45 minutes and score consistently above 15.
- Reread relevant Discover Canada sections and refresh office-holders through official links.
Troubleshooting common problems
Try these fixes before resetting progress.
- The timer or resumed exam looks wrong
- A saved mock keeps its deadline. Once expired, the tool removes it so you can start again.
- Progress is not being saved
- Allow browser storage and avoid private browsing modes that clear it. Without storage, progress cannot persist after the visit.
- A progress file will not import
- Use an unedited export from this tool. Invalid files are rejected without replacing current progress.
- The questions are in the wrong language
- Use the question-language control. It locks during a mock, so finish or leave the attempt first.
- An official politics link is unavailable
- The centre fails closed. Use the official jurisdiction homepage fallback and retry the link later.
Sources, methodology, and independence
Discover Canada is primary. Current IRCC pages verify test rules, and every scored item has a section and page citation.
See the official sources and study-basis section for verification dates and the complete Canadian citizenship guide for application context.
Frequently asked questions
Answers to common questions before you start.
Is this the official Canadian citizenship test?
No. Only a test administered and reviewed through IRCC produces an official result.
What are the official time limit and passing score?
The test has 20 questions, allows 45 minutes, and requires 15 correct answers out of 20, or 75%.
How many times can I practise or take the real test?
Practice here is unlimited. IRCC allows up to 3 official chances; failing all 3 leads to a citizenship hearing.
Can I answer in French while using an English interface?
Yes. Choose English or French questions separately from the interface language. The choice locks only during a mock.
Are these real or leaked exam questions?
No. These are original questions based on official materials, not confidential, leaked, recalled, or real exam items.
What source is the question bank based on?
Discover Canada is primary. Current Government of Canada pages also support test rules and procedures.
Where should I study current politicians and parties?
Use Current politics official links shortly before the test. Changing names and party standings are not scored.
Is my answer history private?
Yes. Progress stays in your browser; no answer history is sent to a server. Clearing site data may erase it.
Can I transfer progress to another browser or device?
Yes. Export a JSON backup and import it elsewhere. Confirmed import replaces existing progress after comparison.
What happens if I leave questions blank or run out of time?
Manual submission requires all 20 answers. At timeout, the mock submits and scores blanks as incorrect.
Can I use the tool with a keyboard or screen reader?
Controls provide semantic labels, keyboard actions, status announcements, and right-to-left support for compatible assistive technology.
Does a passing practice score guarantee I will pass?
No. Use scores as feedback, study Discover Canada, and verify current civic information before the test.
