Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-08-21
Live in Canada ("we," "us," or "our") operates the website www.liveincanada.ca (the "Site"). This is a static informational blog hosted on Azure Storage and delivered through Cloudflare CDN. We do not operate servers that process personal data, maintain user databases, or require account registration. This Privacy Policy explains what limited information processing occurs when you visit our Site, primarily through third-party services we use.
Information We Collect
As a static website, we operate no application servers, user accounts, or databases of our own, and the only personal information we hold directly is the content of emails people choose to send us. Cloudflare (CDN, security, and cookieless Web Analytics) may process technical information on every visit. Google Analytics (traffic analysis) and Google AdSense (advertising, publisher ID ca-pub-4363175176157576) run only according to the consent and region rules in Advertising and Cookies. We do not require account registration or login, and we do not collect age, gender, or other demographic information.
Information Collected Automatically by Third-Party Services
When you visit our Site, our third-party service providers may automatically collect certain technical information. Cloudflare, as our CDN and security provider, processes your IP address and request headers to deliver content and protect against threats. Google Analytics collects information such as your IP address, browser type, operating system, pages visited, visit duration, and referrer URL to help us understand traffic patterns, and it runs only after you grant analytics consent. Google AdSense (publisher ID ca-pub-4363175176157576) may use cookies, web beacons, and similar identifiers for advertising only when AdSense is loaded. Personalized ads are used only when you grant advertising consent and we can positively classify your region as outside the EEA, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. Until we use a Google-certified consent management platform, we do not load AdSense in the EEA, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, or when the region is unknown, even if you allow advertising. If you refuse advertising consent, including through Do Not Sell or Share, we do not load AdSense in any region. We work from the aggregated reports these services produce - overall traffic, popular pages, general location - and we do not use the technical data they collect to identify or profile individual visitors.
Information You Provide Voluntarily
The only personal information you may voluntarily provide is whatever you choose to write when you email us through our Contact page. Reaching us means sending an ordinary email from your own mail program: the Site has no contact form and no sign-up field, and we operate no user registration, login, membership, newsletter, or mailing list system. The Site does have interactive inputs - site search, the calculators, the citizenship practice test, the glossary and FAQ filters, and the AI assistant - and, with one exception, whatever you type into them is processed entirely in your own browser, is not transmitted to us, and is not stored by us. The exception is site search: it submits as an ordinary URL query, so the words you search for appear in the address of the page your browser requests and therefore in the request logs kept by our CDN (Cloudflare) and our static host (Microsoft Azure), alongside the technical request data described in this policy. We do not build search histories or profiles from those logs, and we do not link searches to individuals.
Legal Basis for Processing
We run a static blog with no user accounts and no databases of our own. The only personal data we hold ourselves is the email correspondence people choose to send us; the remaining processing associated with your visit is carried out by the third-party services we use. The legal bases are as follows:
Canada (PIPEDA): The personal information in our custody is the content of the emails you choose to send us. We rely on your consent, which you give by choosing to write to us, and we use that correspondence only to reply to you and to follow up on your inquiry. We do not disclose it to anyone else, sell it, or use it for any other purpose. You may ask us at any time what correspondence of yours we still hold, or ask us to delete it, through our Contact page. The third-party services we use (Google, Cloudflare) process the technical information described above in accordance with their own PIPEDA compliance obligations.
European Union (GDPR): Cloudflare operates under legitimate interest for security and content delivery. Google Analytics cookies are used only if you grant analytics consent through our cookie banner. Our banner is not a Google-certified consent management platform, so we do not load AdSense for traffic we classify as being in the EEA, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, or when we cannot determine the region, even if you grant advertising consent. If you refuse advertising cookies, we do not load AdSense in any region. Any email you send us is processed on the basis of your consent and used only to reply to you, so requests to access, correct, or erase that correspondence should come to us through our Contact page. Access, rectification, and erasure requests concerning the data held by the service providers themselves should be directed to Google (https://myaccount.google.com) and Cloudflare (https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy/).
California (CCPA): We do not sell personal information. The only personal information we hold ourselves is the email correspondence you choose to send us; if you have emailed us and want that message deleted, reach us through our Contact page.
How We Use Information
The limited information processing that occurs through our Site serves the following purposes: to deliver website content reliably through Cloudflare CDN; to understand overall traffic patterns and popular content through aggregated Google Analytics and Cloudflare Web Analytics reports; to display advertisements through Google AdSense to support the Site; to respond to inquiries you send us by email; and to maintain Site security through Cloudflare's protection services. We do not use information to build user profiles, personalize content for individual users, conduct direct marketing, or make automated decisions about visitors.
AI Assistant (On-device AI)
We offer an optional AI assistant ("Ask AI") that answers questions using our published articles. It is currently available only in a limited set of languages (English, Japanese, Spanish, German, and French) and only on supported browsers and devices; in other languages, or where your browser or device does not support on-device AI, the assistant is not shown or simply offers setup guidance. Where it is supported (for example, desktop Chrome with Google's on-device Gemini Nano model, or Microsoft Edge with Microsoft's on-device Phi-4-mini model), your question is processed locally on your own device by the browser's built-in on-device AI. For this on-device mode, we do not send your question to our servers, and we do not store your questions or the assistant's answers. The assistant runs only when you open it and submit a question. The browser's built-in AI is provided by your browser vendor and is subject to that vendor's terms and privacy practices. Answers are generated automatically from our content and may be inaccurate or incomplete; please also read our Terms of Service and Disclaimer. The assistant is currently a preview (experimental) feature and may change or be unavailable at any time.
Third-Party Services
Our Site relies on several third-party services. These services may collect and process information according to their own privacy policies, which we encourage you to review.
Google AdSense: We use Google AdSense (publisher ID ca-pub-4363175176157576) to display advertisements on the Site. Google and its advertising partners may use cookies, web beacons, and similar identifiers when AdSense is loaded. Personalized ads based on your browsing activity are used only after you grant advertising consent, and only when we can positively classify your region as outside the EEA, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. Until we use a Google-certified consent management platform, we do not load AdSense in the EEA, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, or when the region is unknown. If you refuse advertising consent, we do not load AdSense. You can use the advertising opt-out destinations listed below.
Google Analytics (Firebase): We use Google Analytics (Firebase) to understand overall traffic patterns on our Site. This service is only activated after you give consent through our cookie banner. Google Analytics collects information such as pages visited, visit duration, and general geographic location. We only access aggregated reports and cannot identify individual visitors. You can opt out of Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
Cloudflare: Our Site is delivered through Cloudflare's content delivery network (CDN), which also provides DNS management, DDoS protection, and security services. Cloudflare processes technical information such as IP addresses, request headers, and the URLs requested to deliver content and protect against threats. We also use Cloudflare Web Analytics to measure overall traffic: it sets no cookies, does not use fingerprinting, does not track individuals across sites or sessions, and reports aggregate figures only. On that basis it is enabled by default rather than placed behind our cookie banner. For more information, refer to Cloudflare's Privacy Policy at https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy/.
Affiliate Partners: Our Site contains affiliate or referral links to third-party services, including Wealthsimple, Chexy, and Great Canadian Rebates. When you click on these links, you are redirected to the respective third-party website, which may collect information according to its own privacy policy. We do not receive any personal data about you from these affiliate partners.
Advertising and Cookies
Google Analytics cookies stay off until you grant analytics consent. Google AdSense does not load before you make a cookie choice. After you choose: (1) advertising consent granted in a positively non-restricted region enables personalized ads and grants advertising storage; (2) advertising consent granted in the EEA, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, or when the region is unknown does not load AdSense, because our banner is not a Google-certified consent management platform; advertising storage stays denied (Google Consent Mode ad_storage stays denied); (3) advertising consent refused in any region, including through Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information, keeps AdSense unloaded on a fresh page load and keeps advertising storage denied. We do not serve non-personalized ads after a rejection. If ads already loaded on this page, we pause further AdSense requests and reload the page so AdSense is not requested on the next load. An AdSense script that already started cannot be fully guaranteed to stop until that reload. Analytics stays off unless you separately allow it. You can change Cookie Settings in the footer at any time.
Advertising opt-out destinations
You can opt out using Cookie Settings in the footer, including Reject Non-Essential and per-category preferences; Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information, which turns advertising consent off and keeps AdSense unloaded on the next page load; Google Ads Settings at https://adssettings.google.com, where you can opt out of personalized advertising from Google; and the Digital Advertising Alliance tool at https://www.aboutads.info for participating companies' interest-based ads. Turning advertising consent off stops new personalized ads and remarketing, keeps advertising storage denied, and does not load AdSense after the page reloads. If ads already loaded on this page, we pause further AdSense requests and reload the page so AdSense is not requested on the next load. An AdSense script that already started cannot be fully guaranteed to stop until that reload. This control does not send a separate Google Restrict Data Processing (RDP) signal, because there is no ad request after advertising is off on the next load. For Google Analytics, you can install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
Children
This Site is intended for adults seeking information about living, immigrating, working, and filing taxes in Canada. It is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. We do not operate user accounts, and we do not ask visitors to submit their age to us. If we learn that a child under 13 has sent us personal information by email, we will delete that correspondence.
Your Rights
The only personal information we hold ourselves is the email correspondence you have sent us; the rights described below apply to it directly. Everything else associated with your visit is held by the third-party services described above, so requests about that data have to be made to them. Here is what applies:
- Right of Access: You may ask us what correspondence of yours we still hold, receive a copy of it, and ask us to delete it. Apart from that correspondence we keep no personal records of our own: data collected through the embedded third-party services (Google, Cloudflare) is held by those companies, not by us, so requests for it have to be made to them.
- Right of Correction: If you have emailed us and need to correct information in your message, please send a follow-up message through our Contact page.
- Right of Deletion: We will delete the emails you have sent us on request through our Contact page. We hold no other personal data of our own; the technical request and analytics data described above is held by Cloudflare, Microsoft Azure, and Google, so deletion requests for it have to be made to those providers.
- Right to Object: We do not conduct direct marketing or build user profiles. To opt out of personalized advertising, use Cookie Settings, Google Ads Settings at https://adssettings.google.com, or https://www.aboutads.info. To opt out of analytics tracking, install the Google Analytics Opt-out Add-on.
- Right to Data Portability: The only records we hold are the emails you have sent us, and on request we will send you a copy of them in a standard email format. We keep no other personal data records that could be exported.
- Right to Restrict Processing: You can withdraw cookie consent at any time through Cookie Settings, which turns analytics and advertising consent off. When advertising consent is off, a fresh page load does not load AdSense. If ads already loaded on this page, we pause further AdSense requests and reload the page so AdSense is not requested on the next load. An AdSense script that already started cannot be fully guaranteed to stop until that reload.
- Right to Withdraw Consent: You can withdraw your cookie consent at any time by clicking Cookie Settings in the footer. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing based on consent before withdrawal.
- Right to Lodge a Complaint: If you are in the EEA or UK, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority if you believe your data has been processed unlawfully.
- Automated Decision-Making: We do not use your personal data for automated decision-making or profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects.
To exercise any of these rights over the correspondence we hold, use our Contact page, writing from the address you wrote to us from, and tell us whether you want to know what we still hold, receive a copy of it, or have it deleted; we will act on your request within a reasonable time. For data held by third-party services (Google, Cloudflare), please contact those providers directly.
Data Security
Our Site is served exclusively over HTTPS, ensuring that all data transmitted between your browser and our content delivery network is encrypted. As a static site, we do not operate application servers or databases that could be compromised. Site security is managed by Cloudflare, which provides DDoS protection, threat mitigation, and SSL/TLS encryption. Our static content is hosted on Microsoft Azure Storage with enterprise-grade security. While these measures provide strong protection, no method of Internet transmission is completely secure.
Data Retention
We keep no databases or data storage systems of our own. The emails you send us are retained for a reasonable period so that we can respond to and follow up on your inquiry, and we delete them on request. Google Analytics retains event-level and user-level data for the retention period configured for our property, which for a standard Google Analytics 4 property can be at most 14 months; after that period Google deletes that data, while aggregated reports remain available. For Cloudflare Web Analytics and HTTP request data, Cloudflare keeps raw, unsampled logs for approximately 7 days, retains sampled data (about 10 percent of requests) for longer, and makes up to 6 months of data available in its analytics dashboards. Those request logs record the URLs requested, which is where search terms entered on our Site appear.
International Data Transfers
Our website is hosted on Microsoft Azure in Canada. Apart from the email correspondence people choose to send us, which reaches us through ordinary email infrastructure that may route messages outside Canada, we do not collect or transfer personal data ourselves. However, Cloudflare, Google Analytics, and Google AdSense are operated on their respective companies' global infrastructure, and data may be processed outside Canada as part of their services. Google participates in the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. Cloudflare has implemented Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) for EU data transfers. For details, refer to each provider's privacy documentation.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, the third-party services we use, or legal requirements. When we make changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically.
